As mentioned in our last blog, we've been working on making how you enter test results on the MOT testing service simpler.
On 3 November 2016 we changed how you enter test results.
These new changes have been introduced based on the feedback we've received. It should make it easier to find and add defects and also remove defects when carrying out a retest.
You can watch the video below to see what the new test result entry screens look like.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1VeeRkRN7QI&feature=youtu.be
Keep sending us your feedback
Please keep sending us your feedback as it helps us identify the feature improvements that you most want to see.
The easiest way for you to send us your suggestions for improvements is by using the feedback link on the MOT testing service - alternatively, you can also email MOT@vosa.gsi.gov.uk
This blog was updated on 4 November 2016 to reflect that this update was introduced on 3 November 2016.

I just hope that they fixed not recognising cars that already have an mot claiming cars have no previous MOT's. That was a total cock up and a pain when it came to customers complaining they aren't getting credit for days remaining. I was told to contact my local area office, what a joke.
Also why not have the most commonly failed items at the top once you click on a section, as currently the order is a mess, for example, track rod ends, most common RFR for me is worn ball joint, and that's at the BOTTOM of the list.

All we really need is a pen that writes on paper No computer blips
No updates No waiting for computer to vome back on line etc. Just a pen .

If it ain't broke don't fix it . Money would be better spent on refresh courses
Comment by phil posted on
looks ok same stuff differant format, i would like to see a big manual advisory button instead of the little link at the bottom of the page, but why spend money on this instead of the proper re training, this wasent busted the training is, if we have to pay for training why not at a proper training venue !!!!
Comment by phil posted on
why cant the failure entry all be at once instead of having to sent each item up and a page refresher in between, if the internet is slow it take a lot of time ????
Comment by Adrian ball posted on
Have to agree ref vsi i think you should make vsi available if we need to just refresh our memories like how to put certain brake systems on epb s in bedding mode ie range rovers etc. More relevant to new mot testers really but still it would be nice to have a link to vsi if we need it 🙂 Many thanks.
Comment by olly posted on
please bring back the vsi as it was really useful, the system works fine as it is , stop messing about with it.

When registering a vehicle for test, a first test vehicle, instead of asking us to check and ensure it is within the allotted time scale, for which we have no log book to check it, please just put the time and date on the screen and loose all the jargon. You have complete access to DVLA records, loose the red tape please.
I don't think you need to keep changing the layout of COMP II, while personal opinions will differ over what is a better layout etc, keep moving the goal posts with so many testers and AE's from different educational backgrounds, you must be causing some real headaches for many personal who are not experts on computers.
One last thing, setup the manual advisory system so that a record is kept for the tester and station, then common advisories can be pre-selected by us testers when required, your current system of selecting advisories is mentally destroying, trying to search and find components in a none professional written format like the present system, I think somebody with good mot/ engineering experience combined with management skills would be the best person to do the job on behalf of us testers.
Comment by Wayne posted on
Where's the advisory on under trays?? Still not been added!!
Comment by castrolrob posted on
lets see how well it works before complaining, personally I don't think a revamp was necessary and prior performances would suggest trouble ahead but I can hope to be pleasantly surprised

Just carrying on from my previous comment about the new update and leaving it as it is, but re-introducing VSI's.
You say most of the tweaks, changes etc are made because of feedback from ourselves and the trade, but the biggest feedback\comments I see & hear are from fellow testers asking to bring back VSI's, but this seems to be never addressed, any reason why? Or is it being worked on in the background as we speak?
When comp 2 was released, I was contacted to do a questionnaire over the phone to ask how I liked the the new system, how it was working etc etc, I gave most of it 5*'s ( this was prior to it being down for days on end, but that's another story) but I did question the lack of the VSI's, but I was told VSI's were removed from the system because of following feedback from the trade, that it "wasn't being used enough" and "unreliable" , now this I find incredible, this is not what I'm hearing or reading from fellow testers.
So if there is something being worked on in the background to re-introduce the VSI's, how about opening up the dialogue between us and yourselves so we can have some input into it, what we would like to see etc etc.
But if it's not being re-introduced, why not?
Comment by Thomas (DVSA) posted on
Hi Richard,
Thanks for the feedback. We've had a lot of comments about adding vehicle technical information to the service. We have done some work in the background and we've got more work planned on this for the future.
We'll be posting more about the work we're doing on this in a blog post shortly. This blog will ask for more feedback so we can make sure that we deliver something that's useful and contains all the technical information you need.
Regards
Thomas

Many thanks for the reply Thomas, good to read that VSI's haven't disappeared altogether.
Comment by Tim Watts posted on
It looks like a small step in the right direction but still lots of scrollimg around.
A little more time spent on better keyboard short cuts would help speed up the process.
TAB+SPACE works on some entries like brake results but sends you off the page on the log in page. The mouse cursor may well behave fine in a nice clean office but with cold hands in a dusty greasy garage wearing gloves etc its a jumpy process which is slow and frustrating.
VSI please. (try finding the EPB test sequence for a Land Rover in autodata)
Comment by Ian posted on
PLEASE will you make it so when you retest a vehicle you have a tick box for "all failure items repaired" instead of individually ticking each failure item. This drives me mad and takes so much time.
There must be thousands of testers who agree with this.
Comment by Mike posted on
I still think that the layout of the items should be like it is in the inspection manual we all are so used to this lighting, steering and suspension brakes etc not alphabetical
Comment by Brogan posted on
Few replies from DVSA all seem to swerve the VSI questions. Maybe the money could be better spent on training the service desk as the knowledge is zero often giving out the incorrect information
Comment by David Sidey posted on
Why is the failed item green on retest?
Comment by Abz posted on
I suppose it's not a bad change but like people are saying let's have the VSI back....it really helped in some circumstances

Any improvements are welcome, recording mot tests has never been better. would anyone want to go back to having to keep mot pads in a safe, and entering all the details in the register at the end of the day, if you were just an NT you wouldn't have had to do the register. It used to take me at least an hour at the end of every day and if you left it till the weekend the whole of sunday would be spent filling all the details in.

Just got the new system all sussed out then change again ,,no need!!!!, the new card system seems like a waste of time and money,,,no need!!!!!' Mot prices should be fixed price....should have kept the old refresher course,,,....anybody could sit in front of the pc and do the test for somebody else,,,RAB..G..

Vsi would be good especially with all the new bits of technology on some cars these days you sometimes worry about doing a roller brake test
Comment by David posted on
All I can say is unbelievable , what we had was fine why change it. I think it must be to give some IT people a job they must be quiet at the moment and need more work .

Love how the MOT system has been in BETA version for what seems like eons.
Surely the faults, bugs and issues in the Alpha and Beta versions should have been sorted out before releasing to the MOT Vehicle Test Stations for live use?
If you ask me, the MOT computerisation system should have been written by Nominated Testers for Nominated Testers.
I bet half the software development team have never been near a VTS.
Comment by raymond smith posted on
why dose the I.T. department go and see how a mot is done from start to Finnish, to see how hard it is for nt to do thier job, average test is 35 mins then up to 20 mins to find everything on computer to add to advise or fail
Comment by Mick Alcock posted on
There is a old saying if it is not broke don't mend it. Come on guys stop over complicating a system that functions ok at the moment
Comment by ash halai posted on
system is fine as it is .no need to spend money on improving existing system.however new add on should be the priority e.g vsi list and safety recall info.
Comment by pete posted on
I like it, BUT how about an improvement we really need like VSI. We live in hope.
Comment by Steve posted on
Best be buying a load of mice, with heavy duty mice wheels with self cleaning to stop build up of monkey grease!! Why the comp boys can't get it on one page and still be legable without the aid of a magnified glass I don't know
Comment by Brogan posted on
VSI what's this. According to DVSA they researched this with 1000s of test stations and the feedback was it wasn't used. I haven't come across 1 person that was consulted on this. As for this update it looks good not needed at this moment in time. Leaves me nervous to think once applied what are we going to sacrifice whilst enabling it as every time a update is applied it seems to create carnage
Comment by Martin posted on
Really !!! Time and money would have been better spent fixing and keeping the existing setup rather than changing the format so we have to start again.
Comment by brian posted on
Hi I like the look of the new layout.
But I agree with Richard re-introduce vsi's
Comment by Danny posted on
I don't bother reading these email they are always changing it in more ways than others personally bring back the old system with the card machine old school is the best way forward can't be hacked on the old system ??
Comment by Mark posted on
The least amount of clicks and scrolling is the best for me, you get a car with lots of fails or advises you spend ages either scrolling or changing pages
Comment by Graham posted on
From where I'm sitting it looks an improvement but no doubt it will take a lot more tweaking before it is to most peoples liking ?

I don't think there is any need to reinvent the wheel, again! A complete overhaul was not really needed and just over complcates things, again! The simple improvements would of been fine.
Comment by james posted on
lets see some more advisories on tyres. perished, worn inner, outer etc
Comment by Luke posted on
I agree with James tyres are probably one of the most advisable items yet barely any choice on the system!

re Steve's question why keep changing ? why did these techno geeks not just transfer the old computerised system to this net system, i guess it keeps em out of the wifes hair!
Comment by CHRIS posted on
ITS CALLED MODERNISATION. GET WITH IT. THE SYSTEM IS AWSOME X10 THAN THE LAST ONE. yES YO HAVE THE COST OV YOUR OWN COMP & PAPER BUT SO MUTCH EASIER TO USE I THINK ITS THE WAY FORWARD
Comment by Peter posted on
This looks good and if search facility actually works it could speed up this, however, as with the old system, there's a lot of 'scrolling down' and why can't we just have a tick boxes for when repairs are carried out, that way we don't have to wait for the page to re-load, scroll down, click repaired, wait for page to re-load, scroll down, click on next failure. etc, A column for ticks and then click to submit would be so much easier.
Comment by Thomas (DVSA) posted on
Hi Peter,
Thanks for your comment. We are planning further improvements that will remove the need to scroll down the screen when removing defects during a retest.
Regards
Thomas
Comment by Nigel Martin posted on
Anyone notice there were 32 pages of power steering defects following the 'quick search'; Lucky he found his on page 1!
Comment by peter posted on
time will tell on this one. I like drop downs, as most net sites do this. I can see some jobs for the boys. if you know what I mean.
Comment by richard posted on
seriously ! stop messing with it, its fine as it is. If you want to make a change, something that's going to help us, then re-introduce VSI's.

Have you solved the problem of entering class 3 brake results with two brake systems I have lost count of the times of have reported the issue and I never get a reply even using the fend back link
Comment by C, posted on
If you make sure the single wheel of a class III is entered as Control 2, it (almost) always works.
Comment by Colin posted on
If I'm honest that looks like a bit of a step backwards. What was wrong with the current system?
Comment by Simon posted on
Looks like a decent improvement, and logical - thanks.
Comment by Alex posted on
Why not have radio buttons rather than use drop down boxes when selecting a component location as will be a lot quicker and easier to use !
Comment by steve posted on
we just get used to using the system and hey ho its all change again !
