As an MOT testing service user, you’ll get a brand new security card later this year to replace the current PIN system. This card will make the MOT service more secure by making sure only you can sign into your account.
How the card works

The card will work just like online banking security. Every time you press the button on the front of the card you’ll get a unique 6-digit personalised identification number (PIN).
You’ll need to enter your user ID and password and then this number each time you log in to the MOT testing service.
Trialling the cards
Over the last month we’ve been trialling the new card with some vehicle testing stations (VTSs). So far feedback has been positive, one tester said: “it’s good, easy to use, an improvement”.
Another said: “the cards are better than using the current PIN as there is no number to remember and it seems more secure”.
Next steps
Following the success of this initial trial we’ll continue to test the cards with more VTSs over the summer. Testing them like this will make sure that we can keep making improvements to how you use the card before everyone gets one.
Look out for more details about this card over the next few months.

Leave it alone
Sounds like someone is justifying there big pay

If it works like online banking then we only need one pin....right.....
Comment by steadies posted on
no need to change the system,my pin is my pin & it works every time
Comment by Shaun posted on
All the above don't change some thing that works ok
Comment by Gary G posted on
What was wrong with previous system and photo i.d card? This is still open to misuse.......testers are getting fed up with the needless changes.

true leave it the way it is

I agree with most of the comments on here, it's taken a while to sort it out to a point it's pretty now reliable and secure. There is no need to add this pin generator which will at some point fail get broken or whatever and lead to testing delays. If it ain't broke don't try to fix it, it's not an improvement it's a hurdle which at some point well fall over .
Comment by D Banks posted on
looks very fragile. If you keep it in your pocket and bend it will crack.
once again changing a system that works ok or is it make a change just for the sake of it.
sorry vosa think this another step backwards.
Comment by Ken posted on
Don't do this guys took 10 years for seimans / atos to sort mot 1 just as it was stable & sorted it was dumped. If it aint broke dont fix it - if you want the trade to be completely self regulating then say so - this is a joke these cards wont last & will be broken or damaged ( remember we do conduct the tests & not play with a desk - i appriciated dvsa will have a few 5 or 6 figure saleried individuals trying to justify their existance, but try another direction - tired dictatorial undemorcratic attitude of the department
Comment by Rob posted on
I didn't realise that there was enough of a problem to justify changing anything. I know my pin and I haven't shared it with anyone and i don't think anyone wants to get it from me. I agree with the consensus- leave as is.
Comment by tom posted on
Why is this needed
It appears to be less secure than the current system ?
Given the DVSA record of IT systems that are not fit for purpose when released im sure it will cause system failures.
I can loose this card or it will fail and prevent me carrying out my work , but i dont very often loose my head where the current pin is kept
very securely.
Comment by Dan Bedington posted on
More unnecessary change!
Just another card to loose, break,be faulty!!!
Keep things simple and straightforward,
We all have enough things to be doing without more problems
Comment by muzz posted on
The old card was much better than all this agro plus it don't give you much time to see the code.
Comment by Mervyn posted on
I concurr with all the above comments, simple is pragmatic.

It looks like we are ginney pig again please help

Everything is getting more difficult. It's suppose to be time saving. I can see a lot tif testers calling it a day with this new yearly assessment now this
Comment by Stuart posted on
What is the genuine need to keep fixing things that are not broken! It seems every few years a new and more improved system needs to be rolled out and tested to replace an already usable and working system. What next....a written paper MOT with and embossing stamp that has to be secured in a safe in the floor?
Comment by Andrew Sygrove posted on
Just got used to the present system, just leave be, not saying it won't work but there's bound to be teething problems!
Comment by James posted on
Trying to find something new to over complicate things all the time, we are wasting valuable buisness time reading your constant onslaught of new ideas and you are starting to make our garages slower and less efficient, please stop! You said one customer found the new pin really good so how about all the others?what did they say?
Comment by Pete posted on
The pin in your head is a far better way,now another card to misplace or damage waste of time!!
Comment by Peter Early posted on
When we have this piece of rubbish working, perhaps we can introduce a fingerprint scanner, iris recognition and DNA tester to login.
When will you stop wasting time and money and leave well alone.
The security of the system is only as good as the person or persons using said system...................
Comment by Andy posted on
You have outsourced training now as a cost savings exercise to you and introduced a massive cost to us. So why are you wasting more money on a system that already works?
Comment by Simon posted on
I totally agree why change things again when everybody's used to this system now,and why change something that's working, total waste of time again.
Comment by Darren posted on
Have to agree, if it's not broken don't fix it !
Comment by Brige posted on
How is this more secure than the current system in place, another piece/card to deal with. and anyone can generate a code [as shown] Why not leave the current system in place that works at long last without any problems. Meddling and changing things do NOT necessarialy make it better.only for this to be scrapped later for another bright spark and another idea. I agree with the above comments.
Comment by Alan halls posted on
I have to agree chaps. Why mess up something that is working fine.So does this mean we have to use it every time we log on and off an mot?Just another problem maker as far as i can see.
Comment by Dr Alan Yates posted on
I think it's a bad idea to have this
The pin system is fine and more secure then this!
If your thinking about this , you might as well bring back the old I'd smart card system .
The pin code is far more secure then this what your thinking of doing !!
Comment by James Rawlings posted on
Just another thing to worry about .I agree with the above and i have no doubt there will be consequences to misplacing these and probably points to loss ?????? Why When thing are working so will ????? Nuts
Comment by John posted on
Personally I think this should not happen however nobody should know your username so shouldn't be the case as mentioned above. What's wrong with ur own pin like ur bank card pin
Comment by Ian posted on
What happens when the card will not work.
Comment by Paul baker posted on
Load of rubbish waste of time and money ? no need for that
Comment by Phil posted on
Come on now people, it's down to you look after the card, don't leave it lying about work place, and stop moaning!!!!!
Comment by Rob posted on
Why not just install a retinal scanner and put the whole thing in an air lock at the bottom of a pool filled with sharks? ( This is NOT a suggestion !). Can I get on and earn a living now please?
Comment by Jamie hannah posted on
Another waste of time ,I am the only person who knows my pin ,therefore the only one that can issue an mot

Leave well alone,I bet you will have to pay for this again that's all they want is money. You used to get all the paper etc now as you all know you got to supply all of it yourself.Rip off vosa
Comment by Dave Stoke posted on
Brilliant idea, let's all carry it around in our wallets that we may loose or have stolen, and bingo, on the market to anyone disreputable with a licence to print dodgy mot's for other disreputable people, bring it on....

Something alse to go wrong
Comment by David posted on
I totally agree with all the above comments also instead of these gimmicks lets have the online training paid for out of the MOT scheme like it used to be .
Comment by Andy posted on
Yet more numbers to type in and devices to break, and I agree with all of the above comments, I think the triallists must all be yes men, the cards were certainly not issued to the above respondents!
Comment by Mat posted on
This is just beyond crazy, the fixed pin number we have now is perfectly fine, this will just be something else to go wrong and cost us even more money,
If you want to change something make the Mot price fixed at RRP so theres non of this low balling each other
Comment by Viv posted on
If it's not broken, don't try and fix it, the system (after ironing out a few teething troubles) works fine, the pin and password system can't get broken, has no batteries or display to fail, can't get lost or stolen. Please listen to the people who use the system and leave well alone.
Comment by phil haycox posted on
why change a working system cards with buttons dont work for long in my view
Comment by paul llewellyn posted on
paul.yes waste of time leave things alone
Comment by Neil posted on
Will work well.....until it gets lost or broken. What's wrong with my pin code that only I know???
Comment by Andrew Townsend posted on
my bank uses this system. I have been locked out of my account several times because the card generated no. fails to work. Also the card has failed twice in three years. Leave the system alone it's working now, on past experiance you will cause more problems than you fix!
Comment by Lance walker posted on
I think the system is finally working , another step for the tester to make it longer to log on, how long is this card gona last with us heavy handed mechanic keep pressing it up to 15 times a day. Leave it alone.PLEASE

I did over 20 MOTs today. It was a very quiet day in all honesty. And this new system will make it impossible for MOT stations like mine to keep up with the demand. Stop changing things that work.

WHY ??????????

Andy move on with the times and update .
Comment by Frank Holby posted on
Complete rubbish as usual from dvsa. Mind you as they have hardly given Amy info about the new online assessments there will only be 20 testers in the UK next March.

Or broken ,an expensive charge which they will bring in and unable to work until a replacement is delivered

Another thing for the NT'S to lose or break or ho i locked it in me tool box but left keys at home !!!!
What happens thern ??? no more testing.
Well thought out DVSA

Have you noticed a trend !.This is a bit of technology we do not need ,the system is as secure as you can make it all ready if everyone keeps there pin to themselves [ pin in head , pin card on desk/in pocket /at home ] I know which is more secure. Also when the card fails due to the garage environment how long will it take to replace . not sure if this is a well thought out us of limited resources .
Comment by Martin posted on
This is less secure if you ask me, to sign an MOT off only i can do it with my pin but now this device is going to be lying around the garage where anyone can generate a code.
Comment by darren posted on
complete and utter waste of time and effort,i agree with mark and john why change something that already works.....i suppose who ever thought of this ludicrous idea has to justify his/her job
Comment by mark posted on
looks breakable in the work place why do we have to keep changing things that work
Comment by John posted on
What a waste of time. really! The pin for my bank account does not change every time i use it so why does this?
Comment by f ack land posted on
when it goes wrong, and it will, will we have a loner card spare in the depot as before or will we be off line waiting for a replacement?
Comment by ANDY ACE posted on
I agree with you all,why fix something that's not broken?
Comment by Phil posted on
Nothing wrong with the current PIN system which we all keep in our heads (I assume). Can't get much more secure than that.
No doubt we will have to keep this "about our person" at all times & so it will inevitably get damaged at some point just like the old cards. I'm all for gadgets & computers but this seems totally unnecessary.
Complete waste of someone's time & VOSA, sorry DVSA (had to look that up as I couldn't remember LOL) money.
Comment by Kevin posted on
sometimes changes take getting used to, and they would not introduce this card system if they thought it would not Benifit all who are going to use it. And of course make it more secure.
Comment by Andrew Triebel posted on
Just something else to go wrong.
Comment by John posted on
I agree with all the comments above more complicated and no more secure only more likely to cause problems with cards getting lost, damaged etc
Comment by John posted on
I've read all the comments, and thought I should put on mine, but I've commented about things in the past and nobody even listens or reads them, so really fellow testers we are just wasting our time, our time would be better spent on online training. Asiff
Comment by David posted on
Hope it's stops you having to change your password to just had nightmare changing mine
Comment by Andy posted on
You'll still have to change your password, the password change settings are on the severs that you connect to when you log on. I have a windows home server and as a default the windows server operating system has a 90 day password change.
